lyrics

The Fox and the River

He’s left his fields all a’fallow
He’s left his plow up in the row
He longs to be by the riverside
To the river wide he goes

He’s bathing in the cold green water
He’s raising up his golden head
When he spies there a’standing
A fox as sly as she is red

He thinks she calls him from the river
And he’s crossing to the shore
When he climbs upon the other side
She is a creature no more

With red hair falling all around her
And her eyes as clear as glass
He takes the lady in his arms there
He lays her down upon the grass

He will be her own true lover
Come the rain and come the storm
Though the hills above may tremble
He has held her sleeping warm

And now the sweat is on him nightly
And his face is pale and wan
He longs to be by the riverside
He recalls her hair undone

But the lady she is hiding
For he lost her on his way
In the dark he hears her crying
She calls until the light of day
